Storyline:
Based on the letters of Colonel Robert G. Shaw. Shaw was an officer in the Federal Army during the American Civil War who volunteered to lead the first company of black soldiers. Shaw was forced to deal with the prejudices of both the enemy (who had orders to kill commanding officers of blacks), and of his own fellow officers.

Disney to Distribute Chan's Around the World in 80 Days

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution has acquired the domestic distribution rights to Walden Media's spectacular new adventure comedy, Around the World in 80 Days, it was announced by Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, and Cary Granat, CEO, Walden Media.

The film, which stars Jackie Chan and was directed by Frank Coraci (The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer), is slated to be released under the Walt Disney Pictures banner and will be one of the Studio's major offerings for Summer 2004.

The film's impressive cast also includes Steve Coogan, Cecile De France, Owen and Luke Wilson, and a star studded cast of celebrity cameos. Hal Lieberman (Terminator 3) and Bill Badalato (About Schmidt) served as producers. Disney and Walden Media successfully partnered on two films in 2003: the critically acclaimed hit Holes, and the innovative James Cameron-directed 3-D Large Format film, Ghosts of the Abyss.

Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, "'Around the World in 80 Days' is quality family entertainment and another great motion picture from the folks at Walden Media. After seeing the film this weekend, we were convinced that this was a perfect release for summer 2004 and we wanted to be involved in bringing it to the moviegoing public. This is a terrific ensemble cast of actors in this updated version of the Jules Verne classic and brings new excitement that today's audience are going to love. It is a pleasure to be working once again with Phil Anschutz, Cary Granat and the very talented team at Walden Media."

Granat added, "Walden Media had originally planned on screening 'Around the World in 80 Days' for several studios starting this week, but Disney's overwhelming reaction to it made this a simple decision for us. In this highly inventive take on Verne's classic, Passepartout (Jackie Chan) must make it to China in order to return a valuable jade Buddha that was stolen from his family's village. He seeks refuge with an eccentric London inventor, Phineas Fogg (Steve Coogan), who puts his reputation, fortune, and career on the line in a daring bet to make it around the world in eighty days. Joining them is Monique (Cecile De France), a young French artist who decides that a trip around the world would provide new inspiration. Opposing the group is Lord Kelvin (Jim Broadbent), who's wagered his position as head of the Royal Academy of Science against their journey's success. Their incredible adventure spans many colorful and exotic lands from historic London to Paris, Turkey, India, China, across the Great Seas, to a burgeoning United States, and more. Along the way, the group encounters an eclectic assortment of characters including Queen Victoria (Kathy Bates), a Scotland Yard Sergeant (John Cleese), a hot air balloon engineer (Richard Branson), a Turkish Prince (Arnold Schwarzenegger), an eccentric inventor (Rob Schneider), the Wright Brothers (Owen and Luke Wilson), and many other international star cameos.

Around the World in 80 Days was directed by Frank Coraci, whose previous credits include the phenomenally successful Touchstone Pictures' comedy, The Waterboy (starring Adam Sandler). He also directed the blockbuster 1998 Adam Sandler comedy, The Wedding Singer.

Matt Davis Climbs to New Heights

Matt Davis will star in Heights, the Merchant Ivory production being directed by Chris Terrio. Production is under way in New York with Davis starring alongside Elizabeth Banks, Glenn Close, James Marsden and Jesse Bradford.

Banks stars in the lead role as a photojournalist who is forced to come to terms with a complicated relationship in her life. Davis would play an attractive East Village-type who is still living back in the college days.
